Trews Measurements

Jacket

With the help of a friend it's easy to take your Trews measurements. It is not advisable to take your own measurements.  Please use a tailor's cloth measuring tape - a steel tape measure will produce weird and wonderful results!  Simply complete the form below and use it enter your measurements against the product you are ordering online.

The traditional highland jacket and waistcoat is short cut and does not come as low as a modern suit jacket.  Therefore trews need to be high waisted so as not to leave an unsightly gap in between your trews and your waistcoat. Typically these will have a rise of 13-14 inches. So an average height man with a 31ins inside leg would probably have an outside leg of 41ins for a standard pair of trousers but 44-45 ins for a pair of high waisted trousers.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us. Accurate measurements are essential and we rely on these to satisfy your order.  Once you have all the measurements do it all again and check that the results agree.
Waist
Traditional Trews are high waisted garments. The waist measurement will be greater than a standard trouser waist.

Waist - Wearing a shirt stand in a relaxed position with your arms loosely by your side, measure around the waist between the bottom of the rib cage and the top of the hip bone.  The tape should not be too tight - you should be able to insert a couple of fingers under the tape.

Trews and kilts are worn higher than most trousers today and the waist size will not be the same as your trouser waistsize !

W

Seat - This is the measurement around the widest part of the seat (all the way round the buttocks). The tape should not be too tight - you should be able to insert a couple of fingers under the tape. H

Inside Leg -  The best way to measure this is to find a pair of formal trousers that fit well in the leg. Take them off and measure from top of leg seam at crutch to the bottom of the trouser leg.

IL

Outside Leg -   the important question here is do you want standard or high waisted trousers.?

Atandard trousers normally just have an outside leg of 10ins more than the inside leg. This is measured from the top of the waistband to the bottom of the trouser leg. Check this against a pair of formal trousers that fit comfortably.

Typically high waisted trousers for wear with a kilt doublet will have a rise of 13-14 inches. So an average height man with a 31ins inside leg would probably
have an outside leg of 41ins for a standard pair of trousers but 44-45 ins for a pair of high waisted trousers. Once again check this against a comfortable pair of formal trousers. If you already have a kilt doublet wear this and check that the trousers will be high enough.

OL

Leg Bottom  This will be cut to a standard 18inches unless you specify otherwise.  This is the circumference of the trouser.
